FIRE INSURANCE RATES
Fire
casualty companies (insurance companies) establish fire insurance rates for all communities or emergency services districts.
These rates are solely up to the individual companies and may be predicated on numerous factors. Most companies, however,
use a grading schedule established by the Insurance Service Office (ISO), a rating bureau supported by the insurance industry.
An exception to this is State Farm Insurance. State Farm Insurance does not use the ISO rating. Instead State Farm uses their
own company scale.
The engineering model used by ISO to rate individual fire departments evaluates a number of fire
protection factors. The final rating is proportionately developed based on fire protection capability (50%), community
water supply (40%), and communications (10%). For ISO purposes fire protection encompasses fire stations, equipment,
personnel, training, maintenance, etc.; community water supply encompasses size and locations of fire hydrants, water main
sizes, and water storage tank/towers, etc.; and communications encompasses 9-1-1 telephone system, back-up generators for
the system, dispatchers on duty, etc. For your insurance purposes, your ISO rating is based on the services of Orange County
Fire/Rescue Emergency Services District #1 (fire protection), Orange County Water Control & Improvement District #1 or Mauriceville
Special Utility District (community water supply), and Vidor Police Department (communications).
ISO ratings translate
into direct savings to you on your insurance. The current ISO rating for Orange County Fire/Rescue Emergency Services District
#1, "Your Hometown Fire Department", is as follows:
ISO Class 5: If your property is within 5 miles of an Orange
County Fire/Rescue Emergency Services District #1 fire station and you have a fire hydrant within 1000 feet of your
residence.
ISO Class 9: If your property is within 5 miles of an Orange County Fire/Rescue Emergency Services
District #1 fire station but greater than 1000 feet from the nearest fire hydrant.
ISO Class 10: If your property
is beyond 5 miles of an Orange County Fire/Rescue Emergency Services District #1 fire station.
